Nesitenkindami koncertine veikla. Rūta ir Zbignevas Ibelhauptai dirba Lietuvos muzikos akademijoje – dėsto pianistams specialybės bei fortepijoninio ansamblio disciplinas.

I 997 m. R. ir Z. Ibelhauptų duetui paskirta Lietuvos nacionalinė premija.

Saulius Sondeckis 1960 m.

Bacho muzika – gotika", – teigia Albertas Schweitzeris.

The Rūta and Zbignevas Ibelhauptas piano duet was formed in 1989. Both performers graduated from the Lithuanian Music Academy.

The Ibelhauptas have received awards at several competitions, including Rūta's second and Zbignevas's first prizes at the M. K. Čiurlionis Competition in 1982, and second prize at the International Piano Duet Competition in Rome in 1991.

They have performed at concerts organised by the National Philharmonic, Composers' Union and the Music Academy. They have also participated in international competitions in Russia and Ukraine. They have played with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, and in 1995 collaborated with it in recording a CD (Bach's concerto for two pianos and orchestra). Touring Switzerland, Italy and Germany, the Ibelhauptas have also been frequent guests at radio and television studios.

Their repertoire includes works for two pianos and for four hands from the Baroque to the present period as well as compositions that have rarely been performed.

In addition to giving concerts, they both teach at the Lithuanian Music Academy.

In 1997 they were awarded the National Prize.

Having founded the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in 1960, conductor Saulius Sondeckis then did not even dream that his orchestra would become known all over the world, performing more concerts abroad than at home. During thirty-eightyears Professor Saulius Sondeckis and his orchestra have accumulated an extensive repertoire of all epochs and styles have made lots of recordings and CDs in Lithuania and abroad.

BACH'S CLAVIER CONCERTOS

Bach's davier concertos are early examples of the genre. The Baroque musical tradition required exceptional unity of all sections of an ensemble and the solo instrument was used only to emphasise some importam parts of the themes. The obbligato accompaniment could be played on any instrument, including harpsichord, cembalo or spinet (all these Instruments in the 17th century had only one name – davier).

In 1730 Bach wrote many pieces for orchestra and very often conducted the performance of his compositions from the cembalo. One, or sometimes several, of his sons would play on nearby harpsichords. Thus he left seven concertimVn solos for one, two, three and four harpsichords (one, three, two and onerespectively). AlmostalI ofthemaretranscriptionsof violin concertos. The order and choice of movements (fast – slow – fast) that later became usual is kept to in all of them. Each movement has a continuous development of musical thought. The melodies are distinctive, with elements of folk music (siciliana, gigue, aria) and have a cheerful, even playful, atmosphere that is especially obvious in the finale.

Many musicians say that the double concerto in C (BWV 1061) is the best of the davier concertos. This is the only concerto that was conceived and written specially for daviers. „This is not an orchestrai concerto with two performing cemballos but a concert for two harpsichords to an orchestra accompaniment,“ says Aibert Schweitzer, the expert on Bach's music. In the first part the soloists and the orchestra complement each other and achieve a rare diversity of tone. Subtle gradations of sound are impressive also in the second movement – Andante overro Largo – where soft and pleasant intonations create an atmosphere of serene sadness. The finale is a strict three-voice fugue. If performed faultlessly by a maestro it is especially rich and therefore different from other movements. Not only the episodes with two contrasting parts played by the orchestra and the soloists but also the duet elements in both solo parts are very inventive.

The double concerto in C minor BWV 1060 is based on Bach's concerto for oboe and violin or two violins. Its first part, the Allegro. is full of drama, determination and energy. lt has only one theme, played in succession by the soloists and the orchestra. The Adagio is like a meditation in the form of a dialogue. The imitational-polyphonic duet with the soloists passing the melodious theme from one to another is played to the pizzicato accompaniment of the strings. The finale – an Allegro – is similar to that of the monothemic composition of the early sonata. The rhythmic pattern sounds somewhat similar to bourrėe but the dramatic character of the piece covers up the dance features.

The concerto in c minor BWV 1062 is a transcription of the concerto in D minor for two violins and orchestra. The first part is a typical concerto grosso in which a theme full of resolution is dramatically developed with the active participation of the orchestra. Aibert Schweitzer once asked: „How did Bach make up his mind to entrust two melodic voices from the Largo to the harpsichord, an instrument which has a short, choppy sound? Let's leave it on his conscience.“ The second movement of the davier version of the violin concerto has a slightly faster tempo – Andante – and therefore it is possible to transform the melody into a tonai dedamation. Or maybe the composer did this as a foreboding of a much more sophisticated instrument in the future – the piano. We can only guess. The Andante played on daviers becomes one of his deepest and most impassioned pieces and it is hard to find something equally intimate and spontaneous. In the masterly finale it is already possible to hear intonations of the finale of Beethoven's piano concertos.

The concerto in F minor for davier and orchestra (BWV 1056) is also a transcription of a violin concerto (that, by the way, has been lost). Now very often the reverse transcription is performed (from piano to violin). Emotive tension and epigrammatic expression (this is the shortest concerto) attracts attention from the very first bars. The main theme of the first part is based on a characteristic „echo“ – a dialogue between the piano and the orchestra. This is a perfect example of dramatic monothematism. The improvisational qualities of the solo part emphasise the high points of the development. The second part – Largo – is poetic. The darity of instrumentation accentuates the general lyrical colouring of the piece – a brilliant melody is entrusted to the soloist who is accompanied by light chords on the strings. The third part – Presto – is a return to the world of dramatic passions. The main theme and its intonations are somewhat similar to the ritornello of the first part. The „echo“ effect is also used here. However, the finale also has some dance features: fast movement and a three- part metre.

„Bach's composition can have an effect on the listener only if the performer conveys both the main theme and details equally suggestively... Bach's music is Gothic,“ Albert Schweitzer says.
