Statement from the Musicological Community of Ukraine to Musicians, Musicologists, Cultural Institutions, and Public Organizations around the World

Culture has always been an integral part of society, along with economics and politics. Cultural heritage is an important instrument of domestic and foreign cultural policy of the state, expressed in how its values are formulated and promoted, how differing points of views are tolerated, and how controversial positions are debated. The functioning of cultural heritage is always due to its actualization through incessant artistic and critical discourses.

The current situation is no exception. Today, all artistic and scholarly oeuvres are perceived and interpreted in accordance with the situation unfolding before our eyes. russia’s war against Ukraine, which began in 2014 and entered a phase of a full-scale invasion on February 24, has already changed the world, resulting in a major global reappraisal of values and agendas. Right now, the focus is on russian culture, with its enduring narrative of imperial “greatness” and “unique mission,” and the colonialist pathos of “saviors” and “liberators” of the “small nations.” A large number of scholarly works and projects, imbued with this particular narrative, have been continuously presented to the world’s intellectual community. Their a priori uncritical perception of russian cultural heritage has been in need of revision for a long time.

It is out position that everyone who promotes russian art today excuses actions of russian state, whether consciously or unconsciously. Without critical reassessment of russia’s cultural heritage, political and economic sanctions will remain half-hearted measures. We are aware that multidimensional critical analysis and reconceptualisation of any phenomenon takes time. However, we find ourselves in extraordinary circumstances, calling for urgent considerations and immediate consequences.

Thus, we appeal to the worldwide community of musicians and music scholars, in and outside of institutions of Higher Education, to join us in the following, absolutely and unequivocally fundamental for us, actions:

1. Pause any engagement with russian culture and its artifacts until the end of the war that russia has waged against Ukraine and its civilians.

2. Continue interaction with russian composers, performers, and scholars, who have represented and continue to represent russia within international artistic community only if they officially and publicly condemn russia’s policy toward Ukraine and the war.

We fully appreciate the power and strength of russia’s authoritarian regime towards its citizens, and the fear it instills, but the price that Ukraine pays every moment of the unleashed aggression is the lives of people, including the lives of fallen artists.

We appeal to our compatriots separately; to those who continue to promote russian culture in Ukraine and around the world, perform works by russian composers or participate in programs, where works by russian composers are performed. Like no other, you must be aware how inappropriate such tolerance is, one of the consequences of which is the creation of an image of “sacrificial” russian culture, and consequently, the state. We insist you pause all your activities, involving russian cultural heritage.

The claim that only putin is to blame for the war must be struck out from anyone’s narrative, as his rule is based on a solid foundation, with art and culture being important components. Therefore, cooperation with the russians in all spheres, including culture, must cease until the end of the war in Ukraine.
